Venice Canal and Gondola

Photo of a Gondolier on a Venice Canal (Rio Giacomo dell Oro)

The confined space of one of Venice's canals is featured in this "urbanscape" photograph by Michael McLane. A gondolier plies his work in the gondola ahead. A residents' laundry hangs from a clothes line extended from one of the buildings at the canal's edge to remind us that the canals of Italy's Venice are there not to please tourists, but to carry its residents about their daily lives. The canal curves gently to the right ahead causing me to wonder what features of the watery landscape were behind the twists and turns of these watery roads.
